As is 2003, the year two couples very dear to us went through splintering betrayal, hurt and separation. Not every year represents the happiest moments. Other years are remembered in monumental events. And, of course, our new Mickey Ears, 2013.

“I know there is a flag for one year,” he said, “because something bad happened in America.” My 8-year-old was eyeing the labeled boxes, trying to recall each one. This has always been a meaningful ritual for me, but this year I realized that it has taken root in our kids as well.Īs the lights went on the tree, my 5-year-old daughter asked approximately every 10 minutes, “Is it time to tell our story yet?” Each year they come out of the box, one by one, chronologically, with comment.

We acquire a new family ornament annually, and one for each kid. Fifteen years, and we’ve never lost one.īut the real tradition is the ornaments. We love going to pick it out, sizing it up and shocking the workers when we open the trunk of our Jetta and point. Not just the tree, although that is important. Besides the annual viewing of “Love Actually” and the appearance of Evan Williams Egg Nog in the store (and my fridge), there is one Jenkins family tradition that is a keeper.
